The climate crisis is not “gender neutral”, the UN Climate Change High-Level Champions will state at an event chaired by Bogolo Kenewendo, Africa Director and Special Advisor, together with the 2XCollaborative, UNFCCC, and Gender Smart Investing.

The aim of the event, to be held on 29 August – just one of many to be held across the week – is to put gender considerations front and centre in investment in climate action by unlocking the potential of applying a gender lens to climate finance and vice versa.

Other events the UN Climate Change High-Level Champions will host include a Ministerial Roundtable on Finance and a discussion on mobilizing climate capital into nature positive and sustainable African businesses, people, and projects.

Elsewhere across the week, governments, cities, private sector leaders, financial institutions and civil society will discuss Africa’s resilience against climate risks, its transition to a low-emission economy, and partnerships to solve immediate challenges.

Confirmed attendees include Ovais Sarmad, Deputy Executive Secretary for the UNFCCC, Sameh Shoukry, Egyptian Minister for Foreign Affairs and COP27 President Designate, Mahmoud Mohieldin, High-Level Champion for Egypt, Nigel Topping, High-Level Champion for the United Kingdom, Josefa Sacko, Commissioner of the African Union, and Omnia El Omrani, COP27 Youth Envoy.

The event is hosted by the Government of Gabon and jointly co-organized by UN Climate Change, together with its global partners: the UN Development Programme, the UN Environment Programme, the UN Climate Change High-Level Champions and the World Bank Group, as well as African partners: the African Development Bank, African Union, the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, and UN Gabon.

By engaging with African non-state actors and the Marrakesh Partnership, Africa Climate Week is a major event in the run up to COP27. The week will provide an opportunity to identify credible and long-lasting responses to advancing – specifically, financing – a resilient and decarbonized Africa.
