Women and the race to a healthier, fairer, more resilient world

The climate crisis is an urgent challenge that is reshaping societies and ecosystems globally, but its impacts are not felt equally.
Women, particularly in marginalized communities, face some of the greatest vulnerabilities, from disrupted livelihoods to unequal access to resources. Yet these challenges uniquely position them as indispensable leaders in shaping climate solutions that prioritize resilience, equity, and a just future.
Women bring essential perspectives to climate strategies, drawing on their lived experiences to deliver solutions that address the complexities of environmental, social, and economic systems. Their leadership has proven transformative, from advancing sustainable agriculture to enhancing community resilience in the face of climate-related disasters. Studies have shown that when women influence decisions, policies are more ambitious, adaptation strategies are stronger, and outcomes are more inclusive.
Despite this, women remain significantly underrepresented in leadership roles and underfunded in climate finance, limiting the global response to the crisis. This inequity represents both a missed opportunity and a critical gap. Addressing it requires systemic change – prioritizing gender-responsive finance, creating pathways for women to lead, and amplifying the voices of those most affected.
Initiatives like the Race to Resilience and the Gender-Responsive Just Transitions and Climate Action Partnership demonstrate the power of gender-inclusive action to drive transformative change. Meanwhile, efforts such as the UN Climate Finance Innovation Fund for Women and the Podong Indigenous Peoples Initiative underscore the importance of delivering resources directly to women on the frontlines.
