How were the 500 companies selected?

• The Data Explorer includes the top 500 Race to Zero companies by revenue. When they join Race to Zero, member companies commit to disclosing information within 12 months. Only companies that joined Race to Zero before 1 November 2021 are included in this version.
• They range from $2.2bn to $588bn annual revenue. 85% (426) are listed companies, 15% (74) are privately owned. The 85% (426) listed companies represent roughly $20tr of total global market cap.
• Revenue data needed to prioritise the top 500 was provided by London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG).

Which data points are presented?

• The fields in the data explorer are organised under the Race to Zero ‘4 Ps’ based on the 2.0 criteria. The Data Explorer provides transparency on the first 4 Ps of Race to Zero (Pledge, Plan, Proceed and Publish). Data showing progress by R2Z members on Persuade (the new criteria which aligns external policy and engagement on net zero) may be added in the future.
• While the fields presented are representative of key information required to meet each of the ‘4 Ps’, the selection is not exhaustive.
• Empty cells in the Data Explorer indicate that we did not find disclosed information on those datapoints for the relevant company.
• Climate Arc developed the data model in collaboration with Race to Zero, CDP and SDG Labs.

What are the data sources?

• Race to Zero maintains a database of all member companies, including a unique code for each provided by GCAP – Global Climate Action portal. These codes were used by CDP to extract relevant data on relevant Race to Zero companies.
• CDP provided data points on Race to Zero companies that disclosed to CDP in 2022 before 14 October, where those companies allow CDP to make the disclosure public. This covers 371 of the 500 companies in the data explorer.
• SDG Labs reviewed company websites and reports to identify publicly disclosed information. SDG Labs has analysed all 500 companies in the data explorer, but only for selected fields. These fields relate to greenhouse gas emissions, emissions reductions targets and company transition plans.
• Where information is only available from SDG Labs, this is shown in the Data Explorer with an ‘internet’ (globe) symbol in the relevant cell. Where both CDP data and SDG Labs data is available, we show CDP data by default, and information provided by SDG Labs is available by clicking the cell.
• London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG) generously provided access to Refinitiv Workspace at no cost. This enabled Climate Arc to prioritise the top 500 companies displayed.

Why does the Data Explorer only cover the largest 500 companies in the campaign?

• This is the first step in increasing transparency of the campaign
• Over time we will work with partners to share data from all Race to Zero members across Companies, SMEs, Financial Institutions, Healthcare and Educational institutions, Cities, States and Regions.
