Accelerating zero and low emission technologies in hard-to-abate sectors

Green corridors/hubs

Green Corridors are designated transport routes, either land or sea or both, focused on adopting zero-emission or low-carbon solutions to reduce the impact of freight and passenger movement. Maritime corridors enable zero-emission vessels and clean fuel bunkering infrastructure, while land connections provide electric truck charging, hydrogen refueling for freight, electric rail connections, and multimodal interchanges. Green Hubs are ecosystems for producing, storing, and distributing green energy for sectors such as transport, heavy industry, and power generation, or for industrial sites to become less polluting through technologies like carbon capture.

Axis: Transitioning Energy, Industry, Transport

Key Objective: Accelerating zero and low emission technologies in hard-to-abate sectors

Why it matters

Maritime shipping produces about 1.1 GtCO₂e per year (around 2% of global emissions) and handles 80% of world trade. Medium and heavy-duty vehicles ((MHDV) generate about 1.8 GtCO₂e per year (around 3% of global emissions). Green Corridors are coordinated transport routes linking ports, fuel producers, shipping companies, and electric truck infrastructure. They solve the “which comes first, fleet or infrastructure?” problem and help new technologies be adopted faster. There are 62 maritime Green Corridors underway, but only 6 of these are moving towards real-world implementation. Economic challenges can block some projects. For land transport, there are 11 Green Corridors, with varying levels of real-world implementation.
