Resilient urban development, mobility and infrastructure

Resilient urban infrastructure

Develop climate-focused infrastructure projects offers the opportunity for scalable adaptation practices to overcome the implementation gaps highlighted in the Global Stocktake, and integrates mainstream urban infrastructure solutions to create replicable models that accelerate global progress towards climate adaptation and mitigation targets. It enhances implementation readiness through connecting cities and regions with on-demand specialized technical support to develop robust infrastructure projects with a climate focus.

Axis: Building Resilience for Cities, Infrastructure and Water

Key Objective: Resilient urban development, mobility and infrastructure

Why it matters

Resilient urban infrastructure can help cities with disaster preparedness and recover, adapt to change, and recover quickly, especially in a world facing rapid urbanization and climate disasters. Such infrastructure include affordable and resilient housing; leverage the potential of urban NbS solutions to absorb shocks and regulate urban temperatures; and improve social infrastructure and related services to ensure equitable and inclusive access to essential needs and resilience capacities.

By 2050, 66% of the world’s population will live in cities; Cities generate over 80% of global GDP, yet are highly vulnerable to climate shocks; US$250 billion: Estimated annual disaster losses in cities today which is projected to rise to US$314 billion by 2030 without resilience measures.
