Education, capacity building and job creation to address climate change
Education for new generations is about equipping young people with the knowledge, skills, values, and adaptability needed to thrive in a fast-changing changing world. It combines academic learning with critical thinking, digital literacy, creativity, and social responsibility to prepare them for future challenges. Ultimately, it is about empowering learners to navigate change, embrace diversity, and contribute meaningfully to their communities and to the wider world.
Axis: Fostering Human & Social Development
Key Objective: Education, capacity building and job creation to address climate change
This shift matters because traditional education is no longer sufficient for the complexities of the 21st century. The modern world, defined by urgent issues like climate change and the need for sustainable development, demands individuals who can think critically, adapt to new technologies, and collaborate effectively. By fostering environmental literacy, critical thinking, and innovation, education equips future leaders to understand the science, adapt to change, innovate, solve real-world problems, and drive progress toward a more sustainable and equitable future. Educating today’s youth ensures tomorrow’s citizens are prepared to protect the planet and drive a more sustainable, climate-conscious future.
In a global analysis, education is the strongest predictor of climate change awareness. Each additional year of schooling increases awareness by 8.6%, according to data from 96 countries—an effect that is even stronger where education quality is higher.
Education is especially critical for behavior change related to climate change adaptation in low and middle-income countries. Those with more education exhibit greater disaster preparedness and response, experience reduced adverse effects and recover more quickly from disasters.
By 2030, more than 1 billion people will need reskilling or upskilling due to automation and green transitions—making education systems critical in preparing future generations. (World Economic Forum, 2023)
