Even though deforestation rates are 2-3 times lower in tenure-secure Indigenous lands, only half of the total area traditionally held by Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLCs) is legally recognized. Ensuring legal recognition and enforcement of land rights reduces conflict, supports climate resilience, and advances social justice by addressing historical marginalization and empowering local communities. It also creates economic opportunities, improves livelihoods, and fosters greater safety.
Adding 400 million hectares of tropical forest by 2030 will increase the area of forests owned by or designated for local peoples in low- and middle-income countries from the current 30% to over 50%.
Achieving this target would directly benefit at least 200 million people (more than half of whom are women), prevent globally significant forest carbon emissions, protect environmental defenders, and help reverse the rollback of rights, climate, and biodiversity protections.
