Equitable access to adequate food and nutrition for all
Sustainable livestock that efficiently uses land and resources, reduces emissions and pollution, and supports healthy diets, resilient food systems, and broader goals of biodiversity, climate resilience, and social equity.
How this solution relates to the action agenda
Axis: Transforming Agriculture and Food Systems
Key Objective: Equitable access to adequate food and nutrition for all
Livestock contributes to the livelihoods of 1.7 billion smallholder farmers in the Global South and plays a crucial economic role for approximately 60% of rural households in developing countries. At the same time, livestock—which relies on vast quantities of feed crops and occupies nearly 80% of global farmland—accounts for 14–30% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and is a source of increasingly frequent antimicrobial-resistant pathogens. A sustainable livestock transition that supports regional food strategies, reconnects crops and livestock, uses land and resources efficiently, and addresses multiple dimensions of sustainability is required.
