Bioeconomy and Biotechnology
This solution area aims to enable the efficient and circular use of biological resources and bio-based materials to replace fossil-based materials, while safeguarding sustainable ecosystem use, resource productivity, and social equity. A central focus is on structuring the bioeconomy value chains, ensuring scalability, integration, and fair value distribution. At the same time, it boosts social equity by valuing traditional practices, enhancing local industrialization, and improving livelihoods.
How this solutions relates to the action agenda
Axis: Unleashing Enablers and Accelerators including on Financing, Technology and Capacity-Building
Key Objective: Bioeconomy and Biotechnology
Bioeconomy presents a huge economic opportunity (e.g. 9x higher profits per hectare than livestock in the Amazon) while cutting emissions, restoring ecosystems, and improving livelihoods, specially for Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLCs). This is critical as it reduces carbon emissions, cuts resource dependency, and unlocks new green jobs. By scaling bio-based solutions for food, materials, and energy, it accelerates NDC goals, enhances resilience, values local practices, and drives inclusive growth across sectors.
