Aquarech improving the productivity of small-scale fish farmers in Kenya

Although fish farming is an important economic sector in Kenya, the industry also encounters several challenges. On one hand making fish farming sustainable, inclusive and truly beneficial for local communities, accessing the market with fair conditions, to name a few. These issues have been identified by Aquarech, an initiative that harnesses the power of technology and science based decision making to support fish farmers in the country.

Aquarech developed an application which directly connects fish farmers to buyers under a framework of fair trade, providing access to technology to improve fish farming practices and profitability, from feeding advice to temperature sensors monitored from the application. The initiative has a strong gender approach, prioritizing women to participate and access fish markets and giving them an opportunity to quit and challenge practices such as “sex for fish trade”.
