Oceans & Coastal Zones

A healthy and sustainable ocean is critical for the climate and biodiversity of the planet. Investments in marine conservation, resilient aquatic food systems, off-shore renewable energy, sustainable shipping, and coastal tourism can reduce the emission gap by 35 per cent in 2050, contributing to a nature-positive and net zero future.

A healthy and productive Ocean is vital to a resilient, nature-positive and net zero future.

Our oceans are critical to limit temperature rise and increase resilience against climate impacts. Governments and non-State actors, including the Race to Resilience campaign, are mobilizing around the Ocean Breakthroughs to build the resilience of vulnerable coastal communities globally and accelerate the implementation of the Sharm el Sheikh Adaptation Agenda. Sustainable ocean management is the foundation to halt climate change driven biodiversity loss and restore marine ecosystems.

Explore the Oceans & Coastal 2030 Climate Solutions

The Ocean Breakthroughs are a set of targets achievable by 2030 to anchor the ocean in global negotiations and help curb climate change.

The Ocean Breakthroughs provide clear, science-based targets and transformative pathways for conservation, energy, food, transport, and tourism. Accelerated action and investments in these sectors could deliver up to 35 per cent greenhouse gas emissions reduction and contribute to a resilient, nature-positive, and net zero future by 2050.
